Stephen H Kattell

      

 

Steve Kattell is the managing shareholder of Kattell and Company of Gainesville, Florida. Steve graduated with honors from the University of Florida with a BS in Economics in 1979 and an MBA, concentration in accounting, in 1984. Steve received his certificate in 1986 and is a member of the AICPA and FICPA.

Work History
Steve started his career with two years in New York City with Coopers and Lybrand. He then moved to Gainesville and spent four years learning and growing with Purvis, Gray and Company.   In 1990, Steve joined another Gainesville firm where he eventually became an audit partner.  He helped form Kattell and Company in October of 2004.

Client Services
Mr. Kattell has been serving not-for-profit organizations since 1984 and has provided a full range of accounting and consulting services to hundreds of organizations.  Mr. Kattell is past Director of the Non-profit Services Group of Davis, Monk & Company.

Controllership Experience
For a year in 1993, Steve served as the Director of Finance for the Henry and Rilla White Youth Foundation, Inc. in Bronson, Florida.  During that time Mr. Kattell was responsible for reorganizing and perfecting their accounting processes, enabling them to grow from a few programs to a multiple program entity serving clients all over the state.  

In July, 2000, Mr. Kattell became responsible for delivering the fiscal services to the Alachua/Bradford Regional Workforce Board.  These two experiences provide Steve a unique perspective.  Steve knows what it's like to run an accounting office and what it's like to be audited.  He knows what it's like to make payroll and to pay vendors.  He knows how to provide easy to read and useful financial information to other members of  management, to internal and external stakeholders, and especially to a Board of Directors.

Professional Committee Service
Throughout the majority of his career, Steve has found it very rewarding to serve the accounting profession on a variety of Committees.  As one mentor put it, "When it comes to service, you always get more than you give, so give it your best".

• Transparency and Financial Accountability Work Group of Independent Sector.  Formed in 2004 in response to the U.S. Senate Finance Committee's hearing on nonprofit reforms, the Work Group considers the best approach for internal and external reforms for the national not-for-profit sector. Not-for-Profit Organizations Expert Panel of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Formed in 2003, this panel provides advice to senior technical committees of the AICPA and provides liaison activities with other members of the not-for-profit industry.  Steve is currently serving as Chair of this panel.
  
• Not-for-Profit Organizations Conference Planning Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.  This committee plans the annual conference held in Washington, D.C.
  
• Single Audit Working Group of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.  Formed in 1996, this committee was responsible for drafting Statement of Position 98-3 "Audit of States, Local Governments, and Not-for-Profit Organizations Receiving Federal Awards" in response to the Federal Single Audit Act of 1996.
  
• Not-for-Profit Organizations Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants:  Member 1995-1998.  This committee developed recommendations for the profession in connection
  with all matters concerning services provided by the profession to not-for-profit organizations. Not-for-Profit Organizations Conference Committee of the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants: Member 1994-1996, Chairman 1996-1997.  The Not-for-Profit Conference is held each year in June. It is Florida's conference for Certified Public Accountants working with not-for-profits. Not only has Mr. Kattell been instrumental in planning and conducting the seminar, he has been a featured speaker for several years.
  
• Accounting Principles and Auditing Standards Committee of the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants: Member 1989-1993, Chairman 1993-1994.  This committee reviews and comments on all proposed professional accounting and auditing standards. The committee was awarded "Outstanding Technical Committee" during Mr. Kattell's year as chairman.
